Minutes of the AGM 2014

Date: 28th March 2014

Time: 3.00pm- 5.00pm

Venue: Staff Lounge, ACS Primary School, 50 Barker Road, Singapore 309918

INTRODUCTION

1. The 25th Annual General Meeting of the Singapore ASCD was called to order at 3.00 pm by Mrs Lysia Kee, our Mistress of Ceremonies. A total of 35 members and 13 guests attended. As there was no quorum, the meeting was adjourned. Members were invited to tea and refreshment as they waited for quorum.

2. Members and guests had tea followed by a talk given by Guest Speaker, Professor Sow Chorng Haur of the National University of Singapore. Prof Sow spoke on “The Professor’s Suitcase of Science Wonders, Engaging Learners with Visual Demonstrations.” The talk was very stimulating and had many of our members fully engaged in the simple demonstrations which made use of everyday household items to explain science principles. Prof Sow started his talk with this quote:

“Tell me and I will forget; show me and I may remember;

Involve me and I’ll understand.”

Prof Sow showed how easy it was to make students curious and ask “Why?”, the essential first step to nurturing self-directed learners. His demonstrations showed interesting and entertaining ways to teach air pressure, electronic waves and resonance. He left members clamouring for more from his ‘suitcase’.

3. The AGM proper resumed after the talk at 4.00 p.m. Mrs Lysia Kee invited Ms Betsy Lim, President of the 12th Executive Council, to present the Annual Report for the year 2013 and to confirm the minutes of the last AGM.

PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS

4. Ms Betsy Lim warmly welcomed all members to 25th the Annual General Meeting. She began by thanking Dr Ang Wai Hoong for gracing the AGM with her presence. Dr Ang was instrumental in starting ASCD Singapore and had served as the association’s founding President.

Ms Betsy Lim presented the Annual Report for 2013 and drew members’ attention to the list on Page 3 Item 4.2 of the Annual Report. The list showed the range of professional development courses which Singapore ASCD had been running for the past year. There will be more workshops in June and November this year. She hoped that members would continue to find ASCD workshops relevant to their professional development and encouraged members to look forward to the new initiatives and courses that will be planned by Mr Winston Hodge and his new council in the coming year.

On the last page of the Treasurer’s report, the accounts showed that the association had an overall income of $46,197. This was less than the previous year’s income. The reason was because there were fewer workshops run in the course of the year. The item ‘Training purchases (books)’ referred to purchases made for workshops which were bundled with the books.

ANY OTHER MATTERS

19. The new President of the 13th Executive Council, Mr Winston Hodge, was invited to address members. Mr Hodge had three points which he wanted to share with members.

  1. Mr Hodge acknowledged that Singapore ASCD is a very small organisation on the educational landscape in Singapore, compared to the Academy of Singapore Teachers (AST) and the Ministry of Education. Singapore ASCD is the proverbial small ‘little red dot’. What could such a small organisation strive to do? Being a ‘little red dot’ however, was good as it meant that as an organisation we could be nimble and move quickly to respond to changes that might come along the way.

  1. Singapore ASCD exists to serve the fraternity of educators. As such, we should all be on the lookout for new ideas so as to be the change agents and multipliers of the fraternity.

  1. An organisation is only as effective as its partners. Singapore ASCD would need to work closely with schools to continue to build on its relationship with schools and with School Staff Developers (SSD) to become an agency of choice for professional development needs in the fraternity.

Mr Hodge thanked members present and looked forward to serving with the 13th Executive Council.

CONCLUSION

20. The 25th Annual General Meeting ended at 4.45 pm. Mistress of Ceremonies, Mrs Lysia Kee, declared the AGM closed and thanked all members present for their presence and support.
